All they do is charge. I just fought one and DIED 3 GOD DAMN TIMES BECAUSE ALL IT WOULD DO IS CHARGE, LEAVING ME NO WINDOW TO ATTACK. This green bitch set me back 6 paintballs, 5 whetstones, 20 potions and wasted 40 minutes of my time.
I'm using a longsword. I can break its head, cut its tail off, break the wings, etc. But I'm not doing enough damage. What am I doing wrong here?
(They never acted this bullshity in any of the other games I swear)

eh, sounds about right.
Some advice: just do the sub quests for her if you're soloing her (the tail cut sub and headplate smash sub). There's really only ONE thing you'll be missing out on by not killing her, the rest you'll get from the subs, from carving her tail, and from a wing break.
But if you still wanna fight her, I recommend on making her tackle into the edges of the map ie the walls, bodies of water, etc. to cut her traveling distance short, so you'll have enough time to move in and do some damage.
Also bring some flash bombs, since the only way to force her to stop spamming charge (hopefully) is to either stagger her or blind her

Sounds to me like what you're doing wrong is solo'ing. It isn't easy to solo things at the same level as it was in previous games. You're going to be cutting it short virtually each match unless you have gear above the monster itself. As someone suggested, do the tail cut quest & head break and early leave it. That way you get most of the parts you want out of it.
Rathians still give plenty of time to hit them, you just need to fool it into fireballs or stay near a wall during a charge. More than likely, she'll charge back and get stuck against the wall with you able to get a few hits.

I wish I had a good hammer, and I also wish mouse controls worked properly for hammers. > I'm still pissed off about this though. Me and a couple of friends walked all over Rathians dozens of times over. Then I try soloing it after they leave. FFFFFFFFFFFFFF >:C

1. go to Youtube 2. Check out Rathian Videos 3. Understand/Learn its movement 4. Understand how the player dodges/attacks/defends..
(find video of GS, if ur gonna be using a GS)
thats my suggestion.. i was HR41 and was still getting pwned by lower Ian XD
P.S i censored the f word in ur title..

3. Understand/Learn its movement I do understand its movement. It charges, falls on its face, turns around, and does it again. 40 times in a row.

like someone said, you shouldnt be soloing her it seems that monsters deal more damage then in previous games (at least mh2) so its much better to have some ppl in the quest but what works better for me is to always attack her legs from her side, never atk her from behind (her shaking tail is a pain in the ass) also, dont atk her right after a charge, she'll most likely charge at you again and of course, the first thing you should do is cut her tail

I always cut tails first no questions asked. My problem is that it always charges, turns around, and does it again over and over and over and over, giving me no opportunity to attack. I can poke it in the leg maybe twice before it falls on its face again.

I honestly don't see how people have trouble soloing, all the comments about that's what your problem is. I often Solo Basa, Ian, and currently los quite often... And most of my equips aren't any better then what you can make at hr 22.
So, either something is quite odd, or I'm just lucky? Then again I'm not sure how long any of you have been playin the MH series... Doubt it's been longer then me, got the first game the day it was released on ps2, imported the rest and yar...
Just try harder chaos and be much more cautious, remember, dodge roll is your friend! =D

600+ hours combined between MH1 for PS2 and MHF2 for PSP. I've dealt with Rathians before, trust me. Also, you're all telling me what I already know. I AM dodging, I am being cautious, I AM being patient. I'm not sure what else I'm supposed to do if it doesn't give me any reasonable window of opportunity to attack it.

You're telling me that 25 straight days worth of playing isn't that much experience? Also I feel most comfortable with long swords. They have a very long reach, almost that of a lance. The backstep slash is an amazing feature to have and it's saved my ass on too many occasions to recall. Couple that with decent attack power and sharpness, and fast attack speed, and you've got yourself a damn good weapon.

Protip: Soloing isn't easy on this game.
Took me in a good team of 4 people 15~20 minutes to kill a low rank Rathalos.
For Rathian, hunt in a group, or solo there is a quest where cutting the tail is the main objective.
i think your judgement is severely impaired if you are saying pouring 600 hours of your life into a video game is "not much".
